Goal Type:

Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

High School State Champ in Cross Country and 2 mile. Ran track (5K, 10K, Steeplechase) and cross country at Weber State 2000-2004. PR's: Mile - 5:15 (High School - Boise State Stadium) 2 mile - 11:14 (High School - Boise State Stadium) Steeple Chase - 10:49 5K - 17:01(Hayward Field - Oregon) 10K - 35:30 (Stanford University - California) Half Marathon - 1:19 (Top of Utah 2012) Marathon - 2:49 (Top of Utah 2012)

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to run a sub 1:18 half marathon and a sub 2:43 marathon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

At some point I think it would be pretty awesome to qualify for the marathon Olympic trials, but between injuries and babies I'm not sure if the stars will align for me. Overall, I just want to be healthy enough to continue to get out the door everyday for a run. It keeps me sane and happy. Plus, I love the friends that I get to meet and spend time with because of running - they keep me going.

Personal:

I'm married to Ken who also ran at Weber State (yep, we were one of those track marriages). We now have a 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. We live in Ogden and love the Utah running community. We own and operate UtahRunning.com and enjoy sharing our passion for running with others. Besides spending my time being a wife, mother, and runner, I recently finished up a Master's Degree in Exercise Science and I enjoy coaching.

Four easy miles on the treadmill while watching "Miss Congeniality" on Amazon Prime. Thank goodness for movies so I can make it through a treadmill run. Couldn't fit in much more because we headed down to St George today to be here for the Race Director Conference that the St George Marathon Race Directors put on as well as participating in the half marathon on Saturday. Saturday's race will just be a training run for me since every time I push the pace a little bit lately my hamstring/butt issue seems to flare up. I think I'm getting old...isn't hamstring tightness an old lady injury??

Hey Janae! Welcome to the blog! Are you doing a lot of treadmill running? I notice my hips and hamstrings are tighter after treadmill running.

Hey lil Shanae nae. Welcome! It will be good to have you on here and have your expert advice on here.

Thanks Emily and Anshela for the welcome! I'm looking forward to interacting with everyone on the blog. I wish I was ramping up my training a little more right now so it would be more impressive as I track my workouts, but I'm guessing from what I know about people that use fast running blog that that isn't really what it is all about.

Emily, I've been doing some treadmill running, but most of my miles are still on the road. It's an injury that has been hanging around since the beginning of last summer. I'm working on some core strengthening exercises to target weaknesses that I think may be contributing, but that kind of change takes time.

Welcome Janae! It's good to see you on here. Good luck to you and Ken at the race tomorrow, even if it will be more of a workout-type effort. Workout effort for you is still right up there with the top ladies!

I had a hamstring/butt injury when I was 23-24. Eccentric hamstring curlz!

From josse on Fri, Jan 17, 2014 at 17:27:20 from 70.196.198.141

Welcome Janae. Yes I do believe that hammy tightness is due to getting older. I had hammy/butt problem for years until last year. I believe it was the HiiT style strength training that has gotten mine better, plus some good yoga, scraping and massage that I do on myself:)

I wanted this to be more of a solid workout than a race. I felt more tired at this pace than i thought i would but overall I was happy with the effort. 6:59, 7:32, 7:20, 7:19, 7:16, 7:18, 7:35, 6:52, 7:02, 6:54, 7:03, 6:39, 7:03. Avg = 7:05. Hamstrings very tight after along with overall tightness/soreness in legs and hips. I've got some work to do if this effort is going to make me that sore. Overall, I liked the course. Had a lot of variety - busy streets, neighborhoods, paved paths, flat, downhill, uphill (some descent climbs during the middle miles).

Anytime I plan on a less than race effort in a race setting, it almost always feels way harder than I anticipated.

I think mentally we think that 10-20 seconds a mile more will be substantially easier, but it's really not as big of a difference as we think. So, I'm glad you aren't worrying too much about feeling more tired than you thought. It's a mental trap we all fall into when we plan a race as a workout.

50:22 run time today. Ran around my hilly neighborhood and breathed in all the nasty air. Gotta love Utah in the winter! Felt sluggish today, especially on the climbs.

Thank you to my good friend Kathryn for watching my kids at the end if the day so I could squeeze a short run in. I ran around Uintah. A very lonely run. Not too many people out at 5:30 pm running in Uintah. I felt better than yesterday, but also stayed on fairly flat roads. Both hamstrings staying pretty tight throughout each run. I'm forgetting how it feels to run pain free. :-/

Ran for 60 minutes on the treadmill at about 8:30 mile pace. It was the first time in several days that I've felt good. My sore throat is almost gone and no headache today either. With the slower pace my hamstrings seemed happier too. Felt good to get a run in!

Ran for 55 minutes with Alyssa at 6:30 am. The first half of the climb was a gradual uphill and the air was cold, but warmed up into the run and felt fine. Hamstrings feeling good during, but tight after. Had a massage in the evening...low back and neck really tight and lots of tightness in my stabilizer muscles in my hips. Felt good to get rubbed out, but left my legs feeling fatigued the rest of the evening.

Ran for 37:01 this morning up on the Ogden trails. Stayed low and only ran into a few icy splotches. It was nice to get up on the trails again. I was feeling pretty sluggish starting out on the run, but once I hit the trails, there is just something about them that brings an added energy to my body. Overall, ran easy and slow. I didn't get out the door until 8:30, so I took a Clif Shot before the run to give me some fuel. Ready to eat by the time I got home. Hamstrings felt fine during run. Didn't really notice them until after the run. stretched a little while kids crawled all over me...very effective ;-)
